Agronomist Nello Bongiolatti was born in the province of Sondrio in the Valtellina (North Italy) in 1953.
After graduating in Agronomic Sciences at the Catholic University of Milan, he worked for nine years at the Growers Association in Sondrio before becoming a consultant to the Valtellina’s wineries in the nineties. As a freelancer, he manages the reclamation of areas in the Valtellina with a team guided by Tommaso Maggire, Professor of Agronomy at the University of Milan.
For the last 27 years, he has worked at the Fojanini Foundation in Sondrio, where he organises teaching sessions for winegrowers and students, consults and conducts research. To date, he has selected and developed 13 clones of vineyards that are now registered in the national list of vine varieties. He studied the Valtellina’s ampelography and paid particular attention to the genetic and sanitary selection of the Chiavennasca, Rossola and Pignola varieties alongside other rare and old vine varieties cultivated in the Valtellina.
He also works to gain recognition of the value of the IGT Terre Lariane consortium near Como and Lecco and the subzone of Maroggia DOCG in Sondrio. I dedicate this book to my parents, Giovanni Bongiolatti and Anna Silvia Giorgini; to my ancestors, especially my grandfather, Angelo Giorgini; and to my daughter, Elisa. I also dedicate this book to all the vigneron in the Valtellina and Valchiavenna, particularly those who dedicated their lives to diligently building and living on our valley’s treasured terraced vineyards.
